On Sunday night, 10 people were killed when gunmen attacked the village of Kulben in the Kombum district of the Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State.

A community leader who asked to remain anonymous told our reporter that armed militia attacked the community around 10 p.m., when most of the people who were hurt were guarding the area.

Joseph Gwankat, who is the head of the Mwaghavul Development Association and also confirmed the attack, said that it happened when the local vigilantes were on watch.

When asked about the attack, DSP Alfred Alabo, a spokeswoman for the Plateau State Police Command, said that they knew about it but had not yet heard the details.

Captain Oya James, who works for Operation Safe Haven, a multi-security team that keeps the peace in the state, didn’t answer the phone when our reporter called.

In the last three months, the conflict between farmers and ranchers is said to have killed more than 300 people and forced about 80,000 to leave their homes.

Before the attack on Sunday, there hadn’t been a single attack in the Mangu area in the last month.

During a recent trip to the area, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, told people to give up any guns they got without permission.
