The funeral prayer of Sheikh Abubakar Giro Argungu, a renowned Islamic scholar and the National leader of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bidi’a Wa’iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), was held on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at the Idin Sarki mosque in the town of Argungu, situated in Kebbi State. Thousands of mourners, including religious leaders, government officials, traditional rulers, and members of the public, attended the prayer and paid their last respects to the deceased.
Sheikh Giro Argungu passed away on Wednesday at the age of 71 after a brief illness. He was buried at his family graveyard in Argungu according to Islamic rites. He left behind four wives, many children and grandchildren.
The Kebbi State Government expressed their condolences and sympathy to the family, followers, and associates of the late cleric. They described him as a pious, humble, and peaceful man who devoted his life to Islamic propagation and advocacy for righteousness . They also praised his contributions to the development of education, health, and social welfare in the state and the country at large .
Sheikh Giro Argungu was a respected and admired figure in the Islamic community and beyond. He was the National leader of JIBWIS, a group that has over 10 million members across Nigeria and other African countries . He was also a member of several Islamic organizations and committees, such as the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA), the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) . He was known for his teachings and guidance on various aspects of Islam, such as theology, jurisprudence, ethics, and spirituality. He authored several books and delivered numerous lectures on Islamic topics. He was also an advocate for peace, unity, and tolerance among Muslims and other religious groups .
Sheikh Giro Argungu’s death is a great loss to the Islamic world and Nigeria as a whole.
