A group of armed men attacked two buses belonging to the Benue state government-owned Benue Links Transport Company and abducted 10 passengers on Sunday, September 12, 2023.
The incident occurred along the Ajaokuta-Okene road in Kogi state, where the gunmen ambushed the buses that were heading to Lagos from Makurdi, the capital of Benue state.
According to eyewitnesses, some of the passengers sustained injuries, while others escaped unharmed. The gunmen ordered the drivers to stop and then forced the passengers out of the buses at gunpoint. They then selected 10 passengers and took them to an unknown destination.
The incident was reported at Adogo Police Station near Okene, where the police said they had launched a manhunt for the kidnappers and a rescue operation for the victims.
An official of the Benue Links Transport Company, who spoke on condition of anonymity, lamented that the road had become notorious for kidnapping and appealed to the security agencies to do something about it.
He said that the company had lost several buses and passengers to kidnappers in the past and that the situation was affecting their business and reputation.
He also urged the government to provide adequate security for travelers and transporters on the road.
No management staff of the transport company or the Benue State Police Command was willing to speak on the matter at the time of filing this report.
